Among the writers he has translated are the country’s most outstanding authors and thinkers, for example Emil Cioran, Norman Manea, Camil Petrescu and, in particular Mircea Eliade. His work in making known the work of the latter was recognised with the award of the “Mircea Eliade” Commemorative Medal of the Romanian Presidency. Norman Manea was born in Suceava, Bukovina, Romania, due to an essay on Mircea Eliade and his involvement with Fascism, published in 1991, which set off a fierce and lasting debate in the post-communist Romanian press.
